Creating an art direction that hits all the right notes

 

Pharrell Williams and Tuniversity set out to teach music creation by breaking down and rebuilding one of Pharrell's biggest hits. While rooted in education, the book also needed to capture the vibrant creative energy of songwriting and musical expression.

We began by creating moodboards to capture key elements of Pharrell’s aesthetic, refining the vision and honing in on the perfect creative direction. His distinctive fashion, style, and creative work, along with iconic visual touchstones like Blue Note Records, served as the foundation for our art direction.

We developed an art direction that seamlessly blends education with musical inspiration—timeless yet full of energy. It’s firmly rooted in the present while honoring its place in history. Pharrell’s visual influence is thoughtfully understated, allowing the focus to remain on the content rather than the personality behind it.

Applied to the website, the art direction gains added vibrance and motion, transforming it into an immersive experience that highlights not just the subject matter, but the journey of learning itself.

By combining thoughtful art direction with compelling writing, sound files, and tutorials, we crafted an immersive educational experience that conveyed a palpable passion for song creation, inspiring 21st-century learning and the next generation of musicians.
